Macquarie University and CasBio Therapeutics Partner to Advance Gene-Editing Therapies for Vision Loss
Macquarie University’s Vision Science Group has announced a new research partnership with CasBio Therapeutics to develop next-generation gene-editing therapies for glaucoma, one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness worldwide.
The collaboration combines Macquarie University’s expertise in retinal neurodegeneration research with CasBio’s advanced CRISPR-Cas gene-editing technologies. The initial focus will be on developing targeted nanodelivery systems capable of delivering gene-editing tools directly to retinal ganglion cells, which are severely affected in glaucoma.
The partnership aims to translate fundamental discoveries in retinal disease mechanisms into innovative therapies that could protect and regenerate damaged nerve cells. Beyond glaucoma, the research may also contribute to the development of treatments for other neurodegenerative conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis.
